Johns Story

CASE STUDY 2: JOHN'S STORY

"Living at The Vines opened a whole new life for me."

Challenge: Loneliness after loss is one of the least-talked-about reasons people move into retirement villages -- and one of the most common. Classic Group needed a story that spoke honestly to widowers and solo retirees, without it feeling heavy or sad. The challenge was capturing something deeply personal with warmth and dignity.

Solution: Louis filmed John in the village library -- a setting that reflected the life he'd found there rather than the one he'd left behind. John's story unfolded naturally: the motorhome adventure around New Zealand with his wife, settling in Tauranga, building their home, and then losing her. Four years alone in a house on a quiet street where nobody was ever home. Louis gave John the space to tell it honestly, then let the camera follow him through the facilities he loves -- the bowls green, the café, the theatre -- showing rather than telling what life at The Vines looks like when you let it in. The moment John described his 11-year-old grandson walking in and saying "wow, this is like a flash hotel, Poppy" landed exactly as it should.

Outcome:
John's story is the emotional centrepiece of the series. It addresses the fear that holds many solo retirees back -- that moving in means giving up -- and replaces it with something true: a whole new family of friends, grandkids visiting weekly, and a life built around doing what you want, when you want. The Vines had a waiting list for the next build shortly after the series went live.
