The secret to cutting through complexity.
Hello friend,
It’s good to be back in your inbox.
As the year comes to a close, Louis and I have been thinking a lot about the power of slowing down. Not slowing down work itself, but slowing down the story. It seems counter-intuitive when the world moves so fast, but when you pause to find the core meaning in a moment, project, video or story you create a connection that lasts.
That thought has been underlined recently because we’ve found ourselves in rooms where the stakes are high. Founders explaining ideas that are still taking shape. Engineers trying to translate years of complex work into a few clear minutes. Community leaders speaking about political systems that affect us all.
What we’ve noticed is this: Pressure doesn’t obscure meaning, it reveals it. But only if you know how to listen for it…
There is an art to technical storytelling
A case in point: We recently worked with BlueOcean B2B Agency on a video for one of their clients, PFS Engineering. PFS are a team of engineers delivering complex projects at speed, scale, and precision.
The challenge for a lot of engineering firms is that they often struggle to explain the "magic" of what they do because they are so close to the technical details. Watching them articulate their work reminded us of a core truth: It takes immense care to translate highly technical work into something clients can trust and understand
Our job wasn't just to film; it was to find the clarity amidst the complexity.
We saw this same pattern with the AI for Startups workshop we filmed in Tauranga recently and in our podcast conversation with David Webb about the future of democracy. Whether it’s AI, heavy engineering, or social change, the challenge is always the same:
How do you communicate meaning, not just information when the moment counts?
You stop detailing what happened and reveal what it meant. This strategic shift transforms information into emotional connection.
As Promised: Second Nature Botanicals podcast
In our last email, we promised you a deep dive with Kate Sturmey, founder of Second Nature Botanicals.
This conversation is now live on the BoltonInc Effect Podcast. Kate shares what it looks like to build a values-led business from her home in the Bay of Plenty and why the products we choose for our bodies and homes really does matter.
